Description
Until 2005 logging of native forests was rampant in the Philippines. Today only a quarter of the forests that once covered the country are still standing. This resulted in fast environmental degradation and a dramatic loss of biodiversity. Mana cacao grows in an agroforestry system, this is a major step forward from monoculture plantations. Agroforestry promotes biodiversity and creates a protective buffer zone for remaining forest fragments. The farms supplying Mana cacao are close to Mount Apo National Park, which is home to diverse flora and fauna, including birds and orchids that are endemic to the region. Auro, and their partners are joining forces with conservation and landscape restoration initiatives to maintain and increase the rich biodiversity of the Davao region.
